ERA Discloses the Environmental Impact Assessment study report and the preparation of Resettlement Action Plan
Bedele-Metu Road Upgrading Project.
The proposed Road Upgrading Project, Bedele-Metu, is part of the Nekemte-Bedele-Metu Road Project and was identified for heavy maintenance under the Road Sector Development Programme III (2007-2010). The estimated road length is 112 km.
The road project is located entirely within Illubabor Zone of the Oromia Regional State, some 500 km west of Addis. The existing road was originally paved about 20 years ago, but its entire length has now deteriorated considerably. The road traverses areas having significant natural resources, and intensive cultivation of, among others, coffee and cereals. The construction cost of the project road will be covered by African Development Bank and Government of Ethiopia.

Hawasa-Hageremariam Road
The Hawasa-Hageremariam Road Project, is located in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP) Regional State, connects the towns of Hawasa, the Regional capital, and Hageremariam traversing the two zones of the Region, Sidama and Gedeo. The total length of the project is 220 km and it is going to be financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The project road is an important section of the Trans-Africa Highway Cairo-Cape Town. Within Ethiopia and Kenya, the road is a link on the main Addis Ababa-Nairobi-Mombasa corridor. On the Ethiopian side, the road is entirely bitumen-paved from Moyale to Addis Ababa. However the section of the road between Hawassa and Moyale is more than 30 years old. The current condition indicates deterioration and requires rehabilitation to safely accommodate the traffic.
As per
African Development Bank and GOE’s Environmental Assessment and Involuntary Displacement and Resettlement in Development Projects Guidelines, Environmental Impact Assessment report and Resettlement Action Plan were prepared for Hawasa-Hageremariam Road Project.
