Dima-Rad road construction project linking Ethiopia to South Sudan completed

The fact that the 60.2 km long asphalt concrete road is being constructed will be of great benefit to facilitate alternative income trade. In addition to facilitating the region's road transport network, the road is also important in facilitating Ethiopia's social, economic and trade relations with South Sudan.

The Dima-Rad Bridge road project has a significant role to play in the export of fruits, honey and spices, including coffee, which is the main source of foreign exchange for the country and will benefit local farmers. It can significantly reduce travel time and expense by modernizing city-to-city, agricultural and industrial zones, and tourist attractions.

The road used to be a paved road that was not suitable for transportation, and the line has been upgraded to asphalt concrete due to its potential benefits. The project was completed by the Ethiopian Construction Works Corporation with 856 million birrs allocated by the Ethiopian government. Also, the Mizan Dima road project, which is part of the road linking the South and Gambella regions, has also been completed with the exception of some repairs.

The project will cover 91.5 km. 1.3 billion birr has been spent on the construction of the project. Of this, 74 percent of the cost will be covered by a loan from the World Bank, and the remaining 26 percent will be covered by the Ethiopian government. The road construction is being carried out by MCC17, a Chinese international contractor. The consulting firm is working with the Indian ARV Association Consultant in collaboration with the Ethiopian Consulting Net.
